Chief Baseball Officer

Joe Torre is the Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball, overseeing areas that include Major League Operations, On-Field Operations, On-Field Discipline and Umpiring. He was appointed to his role by Commissioner Bud Selig in 2011. Torre is the Office of the Commissioner’s primary liaison to the general managers and field managers of the 30 Major League Clubs and Umpires regarding all baseball and on-field matters.

Philantropic Work

Torre is the Chairman of the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation, which he launched in 2002 with the mission to develop educational programs that will end the cycle of domestic violence and save lives. The foundation’s signature program, Margaret’s Place, a tribute to his mother, provides middle and high school students with a “safe room,” in which they can talk to each other and a professional counselor about violence-related issues. In 2010, Torre was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women.

Playing / Managing Career

Torre spent 29 years as a MLB Manager best known for his tenure with the New York Yankees (1996-2007), guiding them to the Postseason every year, including six World Series appearances and four World Championships (1996, 1998-2000). He also managed the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and Los Angeles Dodgers accumulating 2,326 wins throughout his career ranking fifth all-time. In 1982 and 1998, he was named Manager of the Year by the Associated Press. In 1996 and 1998, the BBWAA named him AL Manager of the Year, and, in 1996, The Sporting News named him Sportsman of the Year. He won ESPN’s ESPY Award for Best Manager/Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999-2001. Torre also led Team USA in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Before his illustrious managing career, Torre had an 18-year playing career and was one of the best players in Major League Baseball. He was a nine-time All-Star, and won the 1971 NL MVP Award. In addition, he won a Gold Glove Award and a Batting Title.
