Cara E. Yar Khan is an award-winning global disability leader who has been honored by UNICEF, the Government of Canada, Porsche North America and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. This week Cara was nominated for Diversability’s inaugural D-30 Disability Impact List for her outstanding leadership in the disability community.
Born in India and raised in Canada, in a family of immigrants, Cara grew up guided by her multinational and Muslim – Christian – Buddhist family, taught to prioritize her education and use her life’s platform to be of service. Cara faces the pressure of cultural expectations regarding what PWD can do. Professionally, she has lived in 11 countries and witnessed firsthand the exclusion and discrimination against PWD, strengthening her resolve and enriching her perspective when advocating for change. Cara uses her platforms to break glass ceilings for PWD. With UNICEF Haiti Cara was the first person with a severe impairment to serve in an Emergency Operation. She promoted the rights of children with disabilities in some of the poorest countries to the UN COSP on the CRPD and is producing a documentary film about breaking down barriers. Even her pro-bono work with the Valuable 500 is dedicated to advocating for PWD to be included and empowered.
